In the history of our nation political parties have always been at odds with each other. I say each other because for over two hundred years third parties have been a rarity. However, the differences were generally over interpretation of the Constitution or slavery. Both sides loved America and wanted to guarantee that, at least in teh 20th Century, everyone would have a chance at prosperity provided they put forth the effort.
In this new century, though, I see something else. Republicans think that this country is still the best in the world, but realize they have to adjust for a public that does not suffer from the burden of critical thinking. Today's public is too atuned to American Idol, not American history.
The Democrats, however, have devolved even lower. Their platform seems to be that America, though better than other nations, has always been a lesser evil. What America really needs, they will tell you, is to be like every other country on the globe. Let's get rid of the pesky First Amendment because where else in the world can the populace have guns? First Amendment, maybe, but not on radio. Let's curtail the voice of the station owner with the Fairness Doctrine. And what about protection from search and siezure? That little paragraph needs to be deleted in order to take land for the public good. And let's interpret the public good to mean whoever can pay more taxes.
Scary times indeed. These Democrats who are sworn to protect the Constitution are in fact dismantling it. It sounds like treason or at the very least violation of oath of office.
